What started as a test platform for Spain\u2019s first floating wind turbine has evolved into a <strong>comprehensive research initiative<\/strong>, addressing <strong>biodiversity conservation, fisheries integration, aquaculture innovation, and advanced environmental monitoring<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To promote the <strong>coexistence of offshore wind farms with marine life and local communities,<\/strong> we have implemented a series of initiatives, some supported by RWE, including:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Promoting Biodiversity with Hybrid Blue-Grey Infrastructure<\/strong><br>The <strong>SATH Reef Unit<\/strong> is a <strong>nature-based solution (NbS)<\/strong> designed to foster <strong>marine life, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable aquaculture<\/strong>. Constructed with <strong>recycled wind turbine blades and mollusk shells<\/strong>, it provides an ideal habitat for marine species, functioning as both an artificial reef and a protective structure for subsea cables.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sustainable Barnacle Cultivation &amp; Multitrophic Aquaculture<\/strong><br>In collaboration with <strong>local fishers and aquaculture experts<\/strong>, <strong>DemoSATH Lab<\/strong> is testing innovative methods for <strong>barnacle farming<\/strong>, aiming to scale it for <strong>industrial deployment<\/strong> on future floating platforms. The initiative also includes <strong>the cultivation of oysters, clams, mussels, and seaweed<\/strong>, promoting <strong>marine food production<\/strong> while enhancing biodiversity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Experimental Fisheries &amp; Species Restoration<\/strong><br>Working closely with <strong>local fishing communities and BiMEP<\/strong>, we are testing <strong>low-impact fishing techniques<\/strong>, such as <strong>surface longlines and traps<\/strong> in the wind farm area. Additionally, efforts are being made to <strong>restore commercially valuable species<\/strong> like <strong>lobster, octopus, sea urchins, and spider crabs<\/strong>, enhancing marine resources while supporting local economies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Advanced Environmental Monitoring &amp; Marine Research<\/strong><br>To understand and minimize the ecological impact of floating wind farms, we have deployed state-of-the-art technologies:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DemoSATH Lab recognized <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DemoSATH Lab has been awarded at the World Maritime Week (WMW) and shortlisted for the prestigious Wind Investment Awards 2025<\/strong> in the <strong>Technical Innovation category<\/strong>. These recognitions highlight our dedication to advancing offshore wind energy as a <strong>responsible and sustainable industry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The energy transition must go hand in hand with environmental protection. <strong>DemoSATH Lab is proof that floating wind energy can coexist with marine biodiversity and local communities, securing a cleaner and more sustainable will be <strong>important in guiding future commercial projects<\/strong>.
