{"id":301,"date":"2019-04-15T16:15:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T14:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saitec-offshore.com\/?p=301"},"modified":"2020-02-17T11:28:40","modified_gmt":"2020-02-17T10:28:40","slug":"saitec-lands-eu-funds-for-10mw-floating-wind-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saitec-offshore.com\/en\/saitec-lands-eu-funds-for-10mw-floating-wind-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Saitec lands EU funds for 10MW+ floating wind design"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Spanish\n engineering consultancy Saitec Offshore has secured almost \u20ac2m from the\n European Commission (EC) to build a part-scale version of an innovative\n concrete floating wind turbine design that promises to have a \n\u201clevelised cost of energy like onshore wind\u201d when built at its full \n10MW-plus size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EC funding, awarded under the Horizon 2020 scheme, will be put \ntowards building a deploying a 1:6 prototype of its SATH ( Swinging \nAround Twin Hull) design for a 24-month offshore testing programme to \nde-risk a 2MW demonstrator, known as DemoSATH, in Q3 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThrough this project we want to de-risk the DemoSATH demonstrator \nand get a unit in the water, test assemblies and various concrete \nmixtures [for the hull] but also to accelerate the commercialisation \nprocess of the 10MW-plus model, as a way of tackling the past and the \nfuture at the same time,\u201d Saitec chief technology officer David \nCarrascosa tells <em>Recharge<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are analysing three potential sites [for the part-scale SATH] at \nthe moment,\u201d he adds. \u201cWe expect to make a decision [by June] for this \nstepping stone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flagship is slated to be commissioned in October, with Saitec \ncurrently in discussions with several turbine OEMs, though it is not yet\n disclosing a preferred supplier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis [EC] funding, of course, has an impact on our commercial \nactivity we are involved in,\u201d says Carrascosa, pointing to the company\u2019s\n current tendering to deliver SATH foundations for 12MW turbines \u201con \nseveral sites in Europe and Asia\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with deployment of a flagship prototype, Saitec is also \ncollaborating with a certification body to advance certification plans \nfor the 10MW-plus SATH floating platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SATH design is based on a joined pair of cylindrical pre-stressed\n concrete hulls anchored to the seabed via a single-point mooring system\n that allows the unit to swing like a weathervane to face the wind. The \nconcept has previously been put through an extensive part-scale testing \ncampaign in wave tanks at the University of Cantabria\u2019s Instituto de \nHidr\u00e1ulica Ambiental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saitec is part of a new wave of floating wind technology developers, including compatriot X1 Wind, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rechargenews.com\/wind\/1741901\/market-changing-floating-wind-design-lands-eu-funding\">recently reeled in EC funding<\/a> to commercialise its PivotBuoy design off the Canaries, that is approaching the coming market with mass production in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe first thing to us is scale up; that makes the [economics] for \neveryone much better. But yes, [mass production] of this new generation \nof technology gives us a new opportunity of reducing the cost,\u201d said \nCarrascosa. \u201cAnd there are also several innovations now that we are \nplanning \u2014 strategic statements of technology \u2014 [including] a low-draft \nplatform, so construction in port is possible, reducing cost and risk \nand installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe biggest thing about floating is that it will be able to make \noffshore wind bigger globally and take it to a wider range of sites \naround the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce you get a first commercial floating wind farm, the next ten \nyears is going to be crazy [in now many project will move forward].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Floating wind power blows into Asia<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Saitec <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rechargenews.com\/wind\/1409436\/univergy-links-up-with-saitec-for-floating-wind-off-japan\">tied up via a special purpose company<\/a> with Spanish-Japanese renewable energy developer Univergy International to develop floating wind projects off Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The world\u2019s first commercial-scale floating wind farm, Equinor\u2019s 30MW Hywind, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rechargenews.com\/wind\/1377935\/hywind-scotland-floating-blueprint-for-a-new-offshore-era\">brought on line in late 2017<\/a> off the Scottish coast. Four separate 24MW array projects are to be built off France with installation foreseen in 2020-21, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rechargenews.com\/wind\/1712012\/eu-clears-way-for-french-flagship-floating-wind-arrays\">following green-lighting by the EU<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Portugal also has an array project, the 24MW WindFloat Atlantic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rechargenews.com\/wind\/1546261\/flagship-windfloat-atlantic-semisub-underway-at-navantia\">under construction<\/a>.\n And back in the UK, the 2MW scout turbine for the 50MW Kincardine \narray, off Scotland, was moored last year. Ireland is the latest to join\n the floating wind build-out, with a first unit destined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rechargenews.com\/wind\/1734710\/first-floating-wind-project-off-ireland-heads-for-water\">for switch-on in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Latest calculations from wind industry advocacy body WindEurope suggest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rechargenews.com\/wind\/1430845\/windeurope-sees-350mw-of-floating-offshore-by-2021\">some 350MW of floating wind capacity<\/a> will be switched on in Europe by 2021 via a raft of projects off the UK, France, Portugal and Norway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a single industrial-scale prototype in 2009, floating wind has \nprogressed at a clip toward commercialisation.
