DemoSATH Lab LBUs

In line with our commitment to environmental protection and the responsible development of floating wind, we continue to partner with key stakeholders to explore and assess the potential of our DemoSATH project.

Our most recent addition, within the framework of the DemoSATH Lab initiative, is the installation of Ocean Ecostructures’ Life Boosting Units (LBUs), now attached to the submerged section of the platform. This collaboration is part of the European TRANSEATION project, which aims to implement hybrid blue–grey structures that not only generate renewable energy but also support the restoration and enhancement of marine ecosystems, creating multifunctional solutions for sustainable coastal and offshore development

These systems act as biomimetic reefs, designed to enhance marine biodiversity by providing habitat complexity, attracting native species, and supporting the growth of key organism. They integrate Bio Boosting System (BBS) and LIFESKIN technology, creating natural substrate structures made of calcium carbonate and minerals that mimic reef ecosystems. Designed as manageable, three-dimensional modules, LBUs provide layered habitats for fish nurseries, micro and macrofauna, and benthic organisms. Easy to install and adaptable, they have been successfully tested in coastal environments and pilot floating wind farms, where they showed measurable improvements in benthic communities and biodiversity.

In July 2025, the installation of two Life Boosting Units (LBUs) was successfully carried out in collaboration with KOTA ZERO, providing the precision diving team for the underwater work. The installation followed a strict safety protocol, as one of the most challenging aspects was working against strong and variable marine currents. Divers carefully executed the operation under demanding conditions, ensuring both safety and precision.

DemoSATH is more than a renewable energy project, it is a living laboratory where the abundant power of the wind meets ecosystem-friendly technologies, allowing us to explore innovative ways to combine clean energy generation with marine conservation and foster sustainable innovation that leaves a lasting positive impact on both renewable energy and the marine environment.
