DemoSATH recognized with the Lurra Bizkaia Award

The year 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of Saitec Offshore Technologies in the renewable energy market. The company’s trajectory is currently centered on the operation of DemoSATH, a 2MW floating wind turbine located at the BiMEP (Biscay Marine Energy Platform) testing area in Armintza. This prototype utilizes the patented SATH (Swinging Around Twin Hull) technology, characterized by a twin-hull structure built primarily from prestressed concrete.

Technical validation and environmental monitoring

Since its grid connection in 2023, the first of its kind for a floating turbine in Spain, the unit has served as a platform for technical and biodiversity data collection. Through the DemoSATH Lab program, the infrastructure facilitates several specialized research lines:

  • Biodiversity monitoring
  • Aquaculture integration
  • Nature incluse designs
  • Coexistence with other activities

The Lurra Bizkaia science award

The Bilbao Bizkaia Water Consortium has recently included this project in its fifth annual awards, granting Saitec the Lurra Bizkaia award in the Science category. This category identifies initiatives that contribute to water-related research and environmental conservation. The award acknowledges the project’s alignment with climate change mitigation strategies and its role in the energy transition.

During the handover of the award, Javier Urgoiti, CEO of Saitec, stated: “This recognition confirms the role of technological innovation as a tool for environmental protection. Collaborating with entities such as the Water Consortium allows us to continue developing solutions that balance energy production with the management of marine resources.”

Strategic outlook

The operational data gathered through DemoSATHis intended to support the international scalability of floating offshore wind. The project operates within the framework of global decarbonization targets, aiming to demonstrate the industrial viability of concrete-based floating foundations for large-scale energy deployment.
