Exploring opportunities for the Basque offshore wind Industry in China

The internationalization of consolidated technologies such as SATH (Swinging Around Twin Hull) has become a crucial step to strengthen our global position and support the growth of the Basque industrial ecosystem behind it. As floating offshore wind continues to gain momentum worldwide, bringing mature, proven solutions to new markets is key to accelerating the energy transition and showcasing regional innovation capabilities.

Basque companies are playing a growing role in the global offshore wind arena. With the support of the Basque Government and aligned with its strategy to boost international presence in strategic sectors, local companies are increasingly active in emerging offshore markets, where the demand for reliable and cost-effective floating wind solutions is growing.

Internationalization is not only about commercial expansion, it also represents a platform to demonstrate technological excellence, foster collaborations with local partners, and strengthen the Basque Country’s reputation as a hub for advanced offshore engineering. Initiatives promoting international outreach help connect Basque innovation with global opportunities while contributing to the industrial and environmental objectives of the energy transition.

China, as the world’s largest offshore wind market moves from shallow coastal waters to deeper seas, floating technology has become essential. But this country is more than just a commercial opportunity, it is a key driver of technological progress and industrial scale-up. Encouraged by this potential and supported by the Bizkaia Provincial Council, we have taken part in several activities across the country, attending major offshore wind events and engaging directly with key industry stakeholders.

These actions underscore the shared commitment to positioning Basque capabilities, talent, and industry at the forefront of global offshore wind development.
