Med Ocean visit to DemoSATH

The Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature – Mediterranean Sea (Med OCEaN) recently visited the DemoSATH floating offshore wind platform in Spain, reinforcing its commitment to the sustainable deployment of offshore wind energy in harmony with marine biodiversity. The visit provided coalition members with valuable insights into one of Europe’s most advanced floating wind pilot projects.

Med OCEaN, launched in September 2023, is a collaborative initiative that brings together NGOs, offshore wind industry leaders, and transmission system operators (TSOs) from across the Mediterranean basin and adjacent Atlantic waters. The coalition’s mission is to accelerate the clean energy transition by advancing offshore wind and grid infrastructure, while safeguarding healthy and resilient marine ecosystems.

During the DemoSATH visit, coalition members attended two technical presentations highlighting:

  • Saitec Offshore’s expertise in floating wind technology and engineering
  • The environmental design and biodiversity integration of the DemoSATH platform, including its potential to support coexisting marine uses and enhance ocean health

These sessions fostered in-depth discussions on how floating offshore wind farms can be compatible with nature conservation, and the importance of regional cooperation to ensure environmentally responsible development.

Representatives from Renewables Grid Initiative, Red Eléctrica, SEO/BirdLife, ZERO, Eco-union, REN, Greenpeace, and Fundación Renovables, BiMEP, participated in the visit—each actively working to shape a future where renewable ocean energy and marine protection go hand in hand.

This visit exemplifies the joint effort and dedication to supporting the Europe’s transition and to advancing innovative energy solutions that respect both climate goals and biodiversity protection.
