Áridos y Canteras del Norte has won first prize in the Innovation category of the inaugural concrete awards organised by ANEFHOP, the Spanish National Association of Ready-Mixed Concrete Manufacturers.
The ANEFHOP Awards recognise achievements whose quality, significance and innovation contribute to the development of concrete as a product and as an industry.
ARCANOR’s concrete plant in Gallarta received first prize in the Innovation category for the design, formulation and supply of the concrete used to build the floating structure for a 2 MW wind turbine. Measuring 30 metres wide and 67 metres long, it is Spain’s first grid-connected floating wind platform and is being developed at Punta Sollana in the Port of Bilbao. The DemoSATH project is being developed by Basque engineering company SAITEC and German energy company RWE, with Ferrovial responsible for construction. The turbine will generate enough electricity to supply 2,000 households while avoiding 5,100 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

On Thursday 8 July, ANEFHOP Director General Carlos Peraita presented the award at the site where the prototype is being built in the Port of Bilbao. Representatives from the companies involved in the project attended the ceremony. Jaime Martín-Muñío, Head of Quality and Environment, and Carlos Badiola, Manager, received the award on behalf of Áridos y Canteras del Norte. Enrique de las Cuevas attended on behalf of Ferrovial. Saitec was represented by Javier Urgoiti, Managing Director; Jesús López-Tafall, DemoSATH Project Manager; and Asís Galdós, DemoSATH Construction Manager. Also present were Raúl Murciego of arlita-LECA; José Luis García Mochales, Head of Construction at the Port of Bilbao; and Javier Martínez de Zuazo, ANEFHOP’s Northern Region Representative.
Since its foundation, ARCANOR has made continuous improvement and innovation in its processes and products a core principle. It sees R&D as essential to its market position and to working with other ANEFHOP member companies to modernise the sector’s image.
